Maple Co-op Membership Meeting & Regional Conferences
The first Intertribal Maple Syrup Producers Co-op Meeting is Saturday, September 27th from 3:00-6:00pm as part of the Indigenous Peoples Task Force Conference at the Cloquet Forestry Center on the Fond du Lac Reservation. Conference registration is $25.
The Intertribal Agriculture Council’s Dan Cornelius will also be presenting at the Research for Indigenous Community Health (RICH) Summit on Monday, September 29th in Minneapolis, and the Mobile Farmers Market will be setup at the event.
IAC Youth Essay Contest & Annual Membership Meeting
The Intertribal Agriculture Council is accepting submissions for our youth essay contest until November 1st, 2014. This year’s theme is “Feeding the Future and Filling the Age Gap in Indian Agriculture”. Youth in 9-12 grades are eligible to submit entries, and winners will receive both an all-expenses paid trip to IAC’s Annual Membership Meeting in Las Vegas from December 8-11, 2014 and a great prize package. Additional information is available in the announcement posted below. A release waiver, also included below, is required.

We also have a limited number of adult producer and youth scholarships available for the Annual Membership Meeting. Youth scholarships (including essay winners) include travel for an adult chaperone). Interested individuals should complete and submit scholarship applications as soon as possible.

Seed Saving Workshop
Summer Leadership Summit: Native Youth in Agriculture
The University of Arkansas’ Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative is hosting a Summer Leadership Summit focused on Native Youth in Agriculture from July 21-25 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Spots are limited, and the application is on the event website. Participants are responsible for travel costs, but summit expenses are covered.
Three Sisters Workshop
This “mini-workshop” will cover planting the three sisters of corn, beans, and squash on Saturday, June 31st at the University of Minnesota-Duluth’s sustainable farm. We’ll be serving corn soup for lunch.
Reminder – Seed School
There are still spots left in the Seed Keepers School from May 11-16 at Shakopee, but they are filling fast, so please register soon if you are planning to attend. Lodging is available free in tipis and at a reduced rate in the Mystic Lake Hotel. This training event is a tremendous opportunity to learning and network-building opportunity.
Reminder – Indigenous Farming Conference, March 13-16
The 11th annual Indigenous Farming Conference will be held at the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, MN on the White Earth Reservation. Organized by the White Earth Land Recovery Project (WELRP), the event features an agenda full of interesting speakers on innovative projects. Registration is required and is available on a daily or full event basis.
Swap Your Seeds, Trade Your Goods at the Food Sovereignty Summit
As part of the Food Sovereignty Summit, our Mobile Farmers Market will be organizing a seed swap and trading market. Toward the end of each day on Tuesday and Wednesday (April 15th & 16th), about 4:00pm, we’ll have extra tables by our exhibit area available for Native artists and seed savers to display their goods for trade and/or sale. We’ll keep the tables open until around 6:00pm when dinner starts, and there is no fee to participate – just bring your seeds and artwork and help us by spreading the word.
Limited Scholarships Available for Food Sovereignty Summit
We have a very limited number of scholarships available for the Food Sovereignty Summit, April 14-17 in Green Bay at the Oneida’s Radisson Hotel and Convention Center. Scholarships are available to individuals from the Great Lakes Region and will cover lodging and registration.
