Kevin Finney discusses evaporating at Jijak Sugar Shack
The day before the official opening of this year’s annual Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit, Kevin Finney the director of the Gun Lake Pottawatomi Tribe’s Jijak Camp, the host of the event discusses evaporating at the Tribe’s sugar shack.
The four day conference opened on Thursday April 21st, with 4 days of activities around Food Sovereignty with Indigenous growers, producers, program managers and agency resources on site. The conference also features over a dozen Indigenous chefs from through-out the western Hemisphere cooking the meals with Native foods, spices and medicines.

Here is the almost final program for the 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit (click the link below). We’re working on a few small updates before sending the printer, but here’s your first sneak peak. Among the many highlights, we’re excited to feature
- four seed keeping workshops by Rowen White and Clayton Brascoupe
- a butchering workshop with both a bison and a churro lamb
- conservation planning workshops from USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and other great partners speaking on topics like climate change and soil health
- food safety training
- an international flavor with foods and presenters from Mexico and Peru/New Zealand
- and, of course, an incredible menu from our amazing chef team that is traveling from across the country; we even have Julio Saqui joining us from Belize to teach traditional cacao processing

Fall 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit at Red Lake
The Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit at Red Lake on September 16-17 features a great agenda and Indigenous foods prepared by Native chefs, including the Sioux Chef Sean Sherman. Some highlights include:
- Soil health workshop with instruction on how different types of soils impact growing with hands-on learning on soil tests, soil maps, pH readings
- Seed keeping workshop led by Rowen White
- Maple sugar meeting
- Pre-session workshops on 1) federal vendor, organic, and GAP certifications; and 2) landscape level conservation and NRCS conservation planning
- An “Intertribal Foods Festival” featuring Native chefs cooking Indigenous foods, which will also be served throughout the entire event
Native Youth in Food & Agriculture – Great Lakes Summit
The Native Youth in Food & Agriculture Great Lakes Summit will be held April 22-24 in conjunction with the Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit at Gun Lake Pottawatomi’s Jijak Camp in Hopkins, MI.

This youth summit will bring together Tribal youth from around the Great Lakes Region, providing amazing learning opportunities in seed saving, culinary arts, food business planning, and many other important topics. Application forms for participants as well as group leaders are available below.

The Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit will be held at the Gun Lake Pottawatomi’s Jijak Camp from April 21-24, 2016. An open planning call in January will give opportunities for input, and we welcome additional partners.

Summary of the IAC Annual Membership Meeting 2015
The 2015 IAC Membership Meeting was a great success. Several hundred attendees, including nearly 80 Native youth attended. Among the highlights were an engaging presentation from Jason Weller who is the Chief of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and presentations from the youth on their efforts to develop agricultural business plans.

IAC Webinar Series
The Intertribal Agriculture Council is offering a series of webinars on topics related to Indian agriculture. All webinar recordings are posted on the “IndianAg” YouTube channel. To date, most topics have focused on USDA programs, with USDA program staff covering the essentials of major assistance programs. Additional topics will be added in the near future. Comment below if there are topics you’d like to learn more about.

Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit
