Collecting and Evaporating Maple sap at Jijak Food Summit 2016

Paul DeMain and the Intertribal Agriculture Council take you on a short walk along part of Camp Jijak’s Maple sapping lines and then over to the Jijak Foundation’s Sugar Shack built at the camp for use by members of the Gun Lake Pottawatomi Tribe. Kevin Finney, the Executive Director of the Jijak Foundation explains some of the things to consider when using an evaporator for making syrup during the spring 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit near Hopkins, Michigan.

Jijak Food Summit: Maple & Sapping 2016

Kevin Finney the Director of the Gun Lake Pottawatomi’s Jijak Foundation and camp describes to visitors the beginning of a renewal in local tribal interest in tapping for Maple and other species for sugar, syrup, food and medicinal products. The Jijak Foundation and the Intertribal Agriculture Council (IAC) have focused several Great Lakes regional conferences on food sovereignty, Native harvesting, and Indigenous culinary development.

 

 

Fall 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit

We are excited to announce the Fall 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit will be held at Red Lake Nation in northern Minnesota from September 16-17, 2016.  More event information, including registration, will be available in the next couple weeks.  Mark your calendars and hope to see you in September.  Registration is now open.

Some highlights we can share now include:

  • Soil health workshop with instruction on how different types of soils impact growing with hands-on learning on soil tests, soil maps, pH readings
  • Seed keeping workshop led by Rowen White
  • Maple sugar meeting
  • An “Intertribal Foods Festival” featuring Native chefs cooking Indigenous foods, which will also be served throughout the entire event

Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit – Event Summary

The 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit held at Gun Lake Pottawatomi’s Jijak Camp from April 21-24 was a tremendous success due to an amazing turnout of individuals and groups willing to share their unique skills and knowledge.  Search #foodsummit and #jijak for event pictures and posts.

 

Thirteen workshops covered a diverse variety of topics relating to Tribal food and agriculture on Thursday and Friday, leading to the Intertribal Foods Festival on Saturday.  Notably, the concurrent Native Youth in Food & Agriculture Great Lakes Regional Summit began Thursday evening as Tribal youth from around the Great Lakes region arrived and then spent the next three days learning and expanding their knowledge.

Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit – Program

Here is the almost final program for the 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit (click the link below).  We’re working on a few small updates before sending the printer, but here’s your first sneak peak.  Among the many highlights, we’re excited to feature

  • four seed keeping workshops by Rowen White and Clayton Brascoupe
  • a butchering workshop with both a bison and a churro lamb
  • conservation planning workshops from USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service and other great partners speaking on topics like climate change and soil health
  • food safety training
  • an international flavor with foods and presenters from Mexico and Peru/New Zealand
  • and, of course, an incredible menu from our amazing chef team that is traveling from across the country; we even have Julio Saqui joining us from Belize to teach traditional cacao processing

Native Youth in Food & Agriculture – Great Lakes Summit

The Native Youth in Food & Agriculture Great Lakes Summit will be held April 22-24 in conjunction with the Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit at Gun Lake Pottawatomi’s Jijak Camp in Hopkins, MI.

Focusing on current agricultural production & food systems issue

This youth summit will bring together Tribal youth from around the Great Lakes Region, providing amazing learning opportunities in seed saving, culinary arts, food business planning, and many other important topics.  Application forms for participants as well as group leaders are available below.
